About the AFX catalyst
FCC units play an increasingly relevant role in meeting the recent global demand for propene. To aid refineries in meeting this demand, Fábrica Carioca de Catalisadores and Albemarle introduced the AFX catalysts innovative technology, specially designed for operations aiming at reaching high propene yields.
Before AFX, propene production in FCC units employing conventional catalysts was limited. The ZSM-5-based additives may aid in increasing the production of this petrochemical intermediate however, the base catalyst determines the propene final yield to be attained.
The exclusive AFX design, its optimized balance between micro, meso and microactivity, special proprietary zeolites and high accessibility minimizes undesirable secondary cracking reactions such as hydrogen transfer and maximizes the propene selective cracking thus increasing its production. The catalyst had several successful applications showing extraordinary performance for a wide range of feed types, from hydrotreated light gasoils to heavy residues.
